JavaOne 2005 Announcements

During his technical keynote session, Graham Hamilton, Sun Fellow, outlined the future roadmap for Java technologies. He announced that Sun will be dropping the '2' from the naming conventions of future releases of Java technologies. The new naming conventions will be:

   J2SE becomes Java SE
   J2EE becomes Java EE
   J2ME becomes Java ME

Current and older releases of these three Java Platform technologies will remain the same. For example, J2SE 1.5 (code named "Tiger") will remain the same. Hamilton noted that there will be no 5.1; the next release of Java SE will be version 6, code named "Mustang." For new releases such as Mustang, single digit numbers will be used in the naming schemes. Mustang's official name, based on the new naming conventions, will be "Java SE 6." Mustang was announced to be released sometime in mid-2006.

"Dolphin" is the code name for Java SE 7, expected in early 2008. The next release of Java for the enterprise will be Java EE 5, available in Beta by early 2006.
